Treasure in Hackney #1

One man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure.

I love junk. I love the things that other people throw away. Cities are full of lost treasures.

Ells and I went fishing in Regents Canal to try and make some sense of this strange little borough, Hackney. What would we find? Would we drag up the truth about our neighbours from the riverbed? Are there stories in the flotsam and jetsam?


This is what we found.

A tiny red plate.

A tiny pinkish tea cup further down the canal (there will be some very angry and thirsty tiny-night-river-people this evening).

A dead bird (RIP).

A plastic glove.

A baby’s dummy.

Sassy Magazine

This is the reason I want to write for teen magazines.

Editor, Jane Pratt, went on to make Jane Magazine (also good) which folded and she is now in radio.

Sassy Magazine are responsible for Chloe Sevigny. They spotted her in Brooklyn where she moved when she was 18 to hang around with skaters and they asked her to intern for the magazine. She did some modelling for them too.

SO cool.

Chloe Sevigny is amazing.

So yeah, you heard it here first, I want to make the next Sassy.

Do you remember Sassy from Homeward Bound?

No. Neither did I. But some people have a memory like a chutney tray. They can dip in and out as much as they want but the lime pickle NEVER runs out.

I’m not sure if that’s a valid metaphor. I’m pretty tired.

I better finish transcribing this Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson interview. She’s actually pretty cool that Kristen Stewart. She has a nice voice.

Sassy Magazine rocked.

Pleo the dinosaur

So my best friend Dave is in to some weird stuff but this is the weirdest yet.

Pleo is a pet dinosaur robot that responds to stimulus and can be trained. If you put him on the edge of a table he can sense the drop and he gets scared. He likes to be smoothed and recognises his own name being called.

He costs £200.

He has an hour life for every four hours of charging and gets sleepy when his battery is about to run out.

The machines are taking over.

My brother got married to his girlfriend, Emily, on Saturday night in Vegas. He’s the coolest person in the whole world and I am so happy for them.

Goodbye City University

So i’ve finished my degree (or diploma as certain people will FORCE me call it). That’s two down before my 22nd birthday, not to toot my own horn or anything.

I started my internship at Sugar Magazine today.

It is adorable.

Today I had to sub-edit “shame stories” that readers had sent in.

Here is one from this month’s issue:

“I was walking my dog at the park when I spotted a lad I’d fancied forever. Wanting him to think I was popular, I pulled the ‘pretending to be on the phone’ trick. But I was concentrating so hard on looking cool I didn’t notice the dog poo bin I was about to bump into. I watched in horror as my phone fell into the bin, and then I had to fish it out in front of my crush. Chances of pulling with poo hands = zilch.”
